What Should You Look For While Buying Skincare Products?

There is a plethora of skincare products available in the market, and it is natural to get confused about which ones to buy. Advertisements are often misleading as they inflate the benefits of the products, so when you actually try them, the results are often less than effective, and therefore, disappointing. But, choosing the right skincare products doesn’t have to be all that difficult. Follow these tips while choosing skincare products –

  1. Check if the ingredients choose your skin type – There are four main skin types – sensitive, dry, oily and combination (where some parts of your face are oily and the rest are dry). If your skin is sensitive and is prone to getting irritated easily then avoid products with harsh chemicals and look instead for products with calming ingredients such as aloe vera, chamomile and green tea. For dry skin, the ideal ingredients are shea butter, cocoa butter and jojoba oil. People with oily skin should choose products with ingredients like clay, lemon and oats.
  2. Keep in mind your skin issues – If you have skin issues like acne or allergies, then make sure that the products you buy do not contain ingredients which will aggravate your skin conditions. For example, mineral oils are comedogenic – they cause pimples and blackheads by blocking the pores of the skin, so they are to be avoided. Fragrances can irritate sensitive and dry skin.
  3. Check for organic ingredients – Usually, the order of ingredients in a product goes from ingredients in the higher quantities to ingredients in lower quantities. If chemicals are listed in the beginning and natural ingredients at the end, then it is likely that natural ingredients have been added to the product in very small quantities, and it’s a largely chemical-based product. Also, check for ingredients like parabens, artificial fragrances, SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate) as they are harmful to the skin and should be avoided.
  4. Expiration date – While this is one of the most obvious things we should be checking while buying a product, it is one of the things we tend to miss often. From the usage of previous products, you will be able to tell how long do your products last. So, when buying a product, make sure that the product’s expiry date is farther than the time period you will be able to finish the product. Also, do not use expired products because it is likely that after expiration, products may develop harmful bacteria which could cause irritation, blemishes and infections on your skin.
